The Organisation

In October of 2000 a coalition of motivated young men and women founded the Club Unesco Universitario Ecofertil in Lima, Peru. Their goals: to develop and promote activities oriented to Human Development that would encourage youth to develop a sense of responsibility for the values, attitudes and behaviors that bring about a culture of peace; with membership open to all who have peace as an ideal and are disposed to work for it from their place of origin.

The circumstances and realities of our lives are our motivation. We believe we must do everything we can to educate one another and improve living conditions so as to not lose the tremendous wealth of human and natural resources that are presently being wasted.

Ecofertil also wishes to establish channels of communication between people of like minds in other nations. An opportunity was afforded us when the United Nations declared this year, 2002, to be the International Year of the Mountains. We believed this to be a great opportunity for dialogue and began developing various projects, one of them the Cordilleras Hermanas (Sister Ranges) through which we hope to establish a permanent exchange between the inhabitants of the two principal mountain ranges of the planet, the Andes and the Himalayas. Our initial exchange will be made by means of reciprocal mountaineering expeditions that will give each other an understanding of what life is like for the inhabitants of these unique environments and what challenges they face in daily life.

Another of our projects is to bring university students from various nations to Peru so as share, promote and reinforce, in an expedition, our vision of a global culture dedicated to peaceful living in sustainable environments. We have asked experts from various fields to support this undertaking on a voluntary basis so as to make this event a world-class model for future exchanges.

Let us prove that distance is not a barrier, that we can be united in purpose. It's up to us!

PRINCIPAL PROJECTS OF THE ORGANISATION

Cordilleras Hermanas is a project that is going to be realised in the Peruvian Andes and the Himalayan in Nepal. This project will create, as consequence, a brotherhood among these two Ecosystems, having as context the International Year of the Mountains, declared by the United Nations for the year 2002.

This project has been created by students of two major universities, Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (UPC) and Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina (UNALM), who will carry out the project thank to the technology that have been provided and the knowledge they have acquired in the classrooms.

The main objective is to make a cultural exchange between The Peruvian Andes and 'The Himalayan' in Nepal in order to create awareness about these two Ecosystems. The scheduled expeditions will have as scenery the marvellous landscape of 'La Cordillera del Huayhuash' -located in Ancash, Peru- and 'The Sanctuary of Annapurna' (Nepal). Having as secondary expeditions 'Ausangate' in Cusco and 'Pariacaca' in the countryside of Lima, both Apus of great importance in our culture.

During our expeditions, we will release reports -text and images- about information related to the mountain. In Peru, we will travel with the inhabitants from the places we are going to. The goal is not only to hear and record their myths and beliefs, and also their day-to-day troubles in living, but also to catch the attention of Peruvian Govern, the International Scientific Community and the public in general about the situation observed in these two Ecosystems.

As part of our duties, we will signpost the route of Ausangate (Cusco) and Huayhuash (Ancash) in order to ease the access to new tourists. Besides, many news transmissions will be published through radial programs, newspapers, TV channels and our Web page.
The outcome of this project will be brought out, basically, as a book. However, we are going also to set up a photo exposition in universities. We are going to edit a calendar with the best photos and create a CD.

As part of this project, we would like to invite two university students from Nepal in order to join us in our expedition to 'Cordillera del Huayhuash' in Peru. Also, we are going to extend this invitation to other universities in the world in order to join us, with the engagement of bringing out, in their countries, the knowledge acquired about life in Huayhuash.

Cordilleras Hermanas intents to create awareness about these two Ecosystems. Since it is important to develop and conserve mountain towns, and to share information about live, in both regions.

At the end of the project, a document will be written with the data picked up from the inhabitants of the places visited. In the writing, we will gather experts who like to contribute with the formulation of solutions to the troubles of the day-to-day living in both regions. This is essential, since the best solutions for a region must have as basis the data given from the people who live in that region.
