The Organisation

The Anna-Schmidt-Schule was founded in 1886 and has been a member of UNESCO's school program (UPS) since 1979. Thus the ASS is one among the about 6000 member schools in 160 nations, which has dedicated its work to the promotion of international understanding and co-operation. Even though the project schools are regular ones, they put a very high effort into the realisation of UNESCO's aims. These topics are stressed in various ways, for example in regular lessons as well as in special projects. The curricular, which includes project work in this field, ranges from the mandatory subject to the UNESCO workshops. Furthermore, Anna-Schmidt-Schule has maintained long lasting exchange programs to schools abroad like the international partner schools in Great Britain, France, Hungary, Spain, the Netherlands, Italy, the United States, and a school in Zimbabwe.

The basics of the pedagogic concept

The curricular and extracurricular activities at the Anna-Schmidt-Schule follow the three guidelines:

  • The general link to the public school system as a state registered private self-organised school
  • Montessori-Education
  • Education towards an understanding of international relations and in order to create an awareness for the boundless consequences for acting in a society. This is in accordance with the Anna-Schmidt-Schule being an UNESCO-Project-School.

General learning-aims

The students

· should be educated according to cognitive, affective and psychomotoric criteria;
· should receive a good level of general knowledge;
· should be promoted to independent, constructive as well as critical thinking;
· are going to learn how to learn;
· are assisted in coping with their limits. It is sensible and useful to establish close co-operation between parents and the school, in order to expect discipline of them; according to their age, however.

Education towards global citizenship

The Anna-Schmidt-Schule gives its students knowledge on international relations and to further an awareness for a global responsibility of individuals and states alike.
International aspects are the focus of projects in the field of social studies and science.

Education towards independence

At the beginning of the twentieth century Maria Montessori founded her first "Casa de bambini" in Rome. In the fifties the "casa de bambini" and the Montessori primary school, both following the principles of Montessori education, were established in Frankfurt/Main. In 1959 our Montessori school received the status of a state registered school.
Today Montessori's concept is recorded as particularly modern, since her pre-dominant pedagogical concern is directed towards an infant-development in freedom and the intensive furthering of pre-school education.

PRINCIPAL PROJECTS OF THE ORGANISATION

Agenda 21now

On Thursday, 25th of April 2002 the Anna-Schmidt- Schule started the third 24-hour-international-internet-conference Agenda21Now. This year's topic was floods and deserts. Over 1700 people from all over the world have participated in the discussion forums co-ordinated by pupils and teachers from Anna-Schmidt-Schule.
The internet conference provides a chance for people from all over the world and from all age groups to discuss the problems concerning our world. The exchange of opinions and experiences enriches everybody's perspective and serves a better global communication.

The large number of participants shows that there is a need for such forums and the Anna-Schmidt-Schule is glad to contribute to a better communication among people all over the world by running the 24hour internet-conference once a year.

The Anna-Schmidt-Schule is a member of the Baltic Sea Project (BSP), an international project of UNESCO-project schools in countries around the Baltic Sea. In 1998 the school participated in the International Summercamp. Ten pupils and two teacher of the ASS created and participated in the workshops about the ecology of the Baltic Sea.
This project provided a better understanding of the region and its environmental problems and made the participants aware of that environmental problems are problems that cross a countrs's boarder.

Furthermore, Anna-Schmidt-Schule motivates its pupils to participate in
