THE EXCHANGE PROGRAM OF THE YNPB WILL START IN MARCH

The Exchange Program between the organizations of the Network is starting to become a reality after a few months of work and the first volunteer is going to Costa Rica to work on the American Encounter.

The Exchange Program of the YNPB will start in March with the visit of the Catalonian volunteer Glòria Vallès, from Amics de la UNESCO de Barcelona, to the Costa Rican National Commission of Cooperation with UNESCO (CRNCCU).

This was one of the projects that was born last November during the 1st Meeting of the YNPB and the first exchange is promoted by the Youth Committee of the CRNCCU, member of the YNPB since its foundation.

For two months, Ms. Vallès will work on the planning of the American Encounter of UNESCO Youth, as it was decided during the last Meeting of the YNPB (Manresa, November 2003).

This exchange will help to develop the relations between Catalonia and Costa Rica UNESCO organizations as well.

Mrs. María Nelly Román Jara, General Secretary of CRNCCU expressed her gratitude to this program. "One of the best ways to extend the Culture of Peace -and to understand someone's culture- is to live it, to feel it inside the facts and not only with prejudices" said, after the meeting where the exchange in Costa Rica was approved.

This is only the beginning of an Exchange Program that intends to be much wider, and to give opportunities of mobility to youth from all associations of the YNPB.

The volunteer is supposed to arrive to Costa Rica during the second week of March.

CANDLE LIGHT SOLIDARITY FOR THE VICTIMS OF THE ISTANBUL TERRORIST BOMBING IN NIGERIA AND MEXICO

Nigeria:

On the 13th of December in a coordinated network plan of the Catalan Federation of UNESCO Associations and Clubs, the Nigerian network organised a Solidarity candle light vigil” for the victims of Terrorist bombing of Istanbul of the 20th Nov. 2003 where about 30 people died and about 450 were wounded. Children and parents and the general public were invited. Songs were sung by the children, while some recited poems for the souls of the victims. A cross section of Nigerian children sang an elegy song: “Candle in the Wind”-by the British Singer Elton John for the victims. It was a beautiful evening of three hours to commiserate with Network and the people of Istanbul. The feeling was really touching as people displayed a profound show of concern and determination to sow a seed in the global fight against terrorism.

The long term goal of such event cannot be underemphasize as this really gingers up the ordinary people's conscience and determination to contribute no matter how small and insignificant their effort mighty be to fight against terrorism.

I MEETING OF THE YOUTH NETWORK FOR PEACE-BUILDING

Last November, between the 9th and the 16th , it took place in Manresa the 1st Meeting of the Youth Network for Peace-Building. It was a week where we thought and discussed about different topics, we exchanged ideas, we worked as a team and were able to discover the various cultures that belong to the network.

The project of a Youth Network for Peace-Building was born from the experience in international youth events, where the need for developing stable ways of working with youngsters from different countries was identified, in order to generate common projects and proposals.

In consequence, the main aim of the network is to contact young people from all over the world that are working for peace and conflict resolution, to foster the communication among them and to spread information about its members or information that might be of their interest.

Youngsters from diverse zones of the globe take part on the network, and this allows them to exchange information and experiences, to learn from each other and to participate in international gatherings that pursuit these goals.

In this first meeting, 35 people from different regions participated: Argentina, Basque Country, Belgium, Catalonia, Costa Rica, Crimea-Ukraine, Croatia, Chile, Greece, Israel, Lebanon, Mali, Mexico, Nepal, Nigeria, Palestine, Paraguay, Poland, Portugal, Senegal, Uganda and Uruguay.

The main topics were conflict transformation, culture of peace, cultural diversity and interreligious dialogue. Apart from having conferences and working sessions about these subjects, some projects were proposed to develop in the future within the frame of the network. These are related mainly to the cultural and educational fields, as we think they are the most important instruments to generate a culture of peace in order to overcome the conflicts that are affecting our world nowadays.

Speaking from my personal experience, I found very interesting the possibility of sharing our problems and difficulties, which are so different in every region, trying to understand the other and to think together how can we help each other. The cultural exchange, the diversity of habits and traditions that we could know, was also very enriching. I believe that the experience we had is unique, and it will give us the strength to continue working in our countries, enhancing our capacity and feeling that we are not alone in this path.

As the final product of our meeting, we wrote a declaration that establishes our goals, the affairs we consider important and where are we heading. With the consense of all the participants, we came up with the “Youth Declaration of Manresa 2003”.

In this way we think another world is possible, and we are working to achieve this.
