The World Sight Day is commemorated on October 9th. On this occasion, the UNESCO Chair on Sight and Development, in cooperation with Unescocat, promotes an awareness campaign on the importance to prevent and treat sight impairment. A series of teaching materials including tales and interactive games are being distributed to organisations that support the campaign throughout the country.

On the occasion of the World Teachers Day, the UNESCO Centre of Catalonia and the Ministry of Education of the Catalan Government organise a roundtable called "Teachers matter" this October 6th at 1:00 pm at the CEIP Drassanes (Av. Drassanes, 8-10 in Barcelona) with speeches by the Catalan Minister of Education, Ernest Maragall, the Director of the UNESCO Centre of Catalonia and Lucio Sia, member of UNESCO's Teachers Training Section.

The UNESCO Centre of Catalonia takes part in the second Mediterranean Youth Encounter on "Environment in a global context" held in Beirut from September 10 to 14. The meeting in which Alex Cosials represents Unescocat is aimed at raising consciousness on environmental issues and facilitate contact between young people from the Mediterranean area.

Miquel Angel Essomba, director of the UNESCO Centre of Catalonia will give a speech on "Education, diversity and cohesion" during the seminar entitled "A year after the Local Education plan" at Sant Vicenç dels Horts. This meeting directed to teachers and other social agents of that city will start at 9:30 am at the Auditorium Molí dels Frares at Sant Vicenç.

The UNESCO Centre of Catalonia takes part in the initiative "Colours for the Planet" organised by the Andorran National Commission for UNESCO, in Andorra, from July 21 to August 3. This event that gathers artists from the five continents to create and discuss the issue of climate change is taking place within the framework of the International Year of Planet Earth and the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue.

The UNESCO Centre of Catalonia presents the series of posters "Water in the XXIst century" this July 21 at ExpoZaragoza. The Fundació Territori i Paisatge of Caixa Catalunya's Social Work, the Catalan Ministry of Environment and Housing, and the World Water Assessment Programme will also take part in the presentation at the UN-Water Pavilion at ExpoZaragoza 2008, at 7:30 pm.

On July 11th, the UNESCO Centre of Catalonia and the Tarragona City Council organise a seminar on Tarragona's cultural and religious diversity. The seminar will be inaugurated by the Mayor, Josep Fèlix Ballesteros, and the Director of the UNESCO Centre of Catalonia, Miquel Àngel Essomba, at Tarragona's Palau Firal at 10.30 am.

The UNESCO Centre of Catalonia has renewed its cooperation agreement with UNESCO's office in Rabat to launch a new stage of the projet of "Education,diversity and social cohesion in the Western Mediterranean". This UNESCO project gathers researchers and education professionals from Algeria, Spain, France, Italy, Morrocco and Tunisia. The UNESCO Centre of Catalonia coordinates the initiative in Spain.

The UNESCO Centre of Catalonia and Badalona's city council organise a round table on "Diversity of religions and beliefs: management patterns from laicism" on July 3 at 7:00 pm at the Badalona Museum (plaça de l'Assemblea de Catalunya, 1). Josep Pera, city councillor for citizenship and living-together will introduce the speakers of this table moderated by Francesc Torradeflot: Juan Ferreiro, Deputy Director for Religious Affairs of the Spanish Ministry of Justice; Salvador Tarodo, professor of canon law at the University of León and Joan Gómez, sociologist of religions.

The UNESCO Centre of Catalonia and the City Council of Badalona present their model of management of religious diversity at an international meeting organized by the Asia-Europe Foundation in Bandung (Indonesia) from June 23 to 27 with representatives from fourty Asian and European governments. The Catalan delegates are Manuel Pérez, specialist of Unescocat's Area of Interreligious Dialogue and Saida Javaloy, community mediator from the Badalona City Council.
