Somescola's spokespersons have appeared at a press conference on Tuesday 26 June to assess the announcement of the Supreme Court concerning Catalan as the teaching language at school. The representative of Platform for the Language, Teresa Casals, warned that there is an intent to crack the social and educational model which has been an example of success over many years. On the other hand, the president of Omnium, Muriel Casals reminded that this announcement comes just two years after the ruling of the Constitutional Court against the Catalan Statute, which wiped out sensitive aspects of education.
For his part, José María Cervello, representing USTEC union, has appealed to government and parliament not to move back even a millimeter in the defense of the Catalan linguistic model in schools. In that sense, Raúl Manzano of the Educational Renewal Movement has announced three actions to be undertaken by Somescola. First, deliver a motion to those responsible for education in parliamentary groups. Second, ask for an interview with the Spanish Minister of Education, Jose Ignacio Wert. Finally, next 26 September, coinciding with the European Day of Languages, Somescola will organize awareness raising activities in schools and an academic event.
The director of Unescocat, Miquel-Àngel Essomba, declared "this sentence is the most serious to date since unlike the previous ones that had a case-by-case approach, this one touches the very heart of the system and affects the model of coexistence. "
Somescola is a group of civic, cultural and educational organisations, including the UNESCO Centre of Catalonia, who defend the Catalan school and the model of social cohesion it represents.
