School contest on climate change

Award Ceremony of the Tales Contest "Stories of Climate Change"

La Pedrera hosted this Saturday, June 16, the award ceremony of the school contest of "Stories of Climate Change" organized by the UNESCO Centre of Catalonia and the Foundation CatalunyaCaixa. No less than 40 schools took part in the process, with 1333 students who wrote 219 stories. Unescocat and CatalunyaCaixa Foundation have been cooperating for many years for the creation of educational materials for schools on forests, water and biodiversity, among others. This year the theme was climate change.

The 10 winners are: Escola Dr. Joaquim Salarich in Vic, Escola Eugeni d’Ors in Valls, Escola Mestral in Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Escola Cor de Maria in Sant Celoni, Escola Les Pinediques in Taradell, Escola del Mar in Barcelona, Escola El Carme-Sant Elies in Vilafranca del Penedès, Escola Alfons I in Puigcerdà, Escola Parroquial Sant Feliu in Cabrera de Mar, and Escola La Closa in Esterri d’Àneu.

The stories presented are the tangible work of a process conducted during the 2011-2012 academic year in which teachers and students worked through many different dynamics, but all very participatory, cooperative and supportive. After a preliminary work on climate change, the children wrote and illustrated several stories and then chose together the work that would best represent their school.

The work on climate change in schools has taken many forms: compilation of news and commentaries on climate change, projections of documentaries and films on this subject, experiments, story-telling to the youngest, exhibitions, visit of illustrators ... Even St. Jordi (book festival), was the opportunity to organize exhibitions of stories produced in some centers and tell them to other students in the school. To facilitate the work of writing, the organizers provided the resources to work on climate change from different perspectives.
