27/09/2011

Responding to the call of the platform Somescola.cat, the country's schools celebrate "their favorite Catalan words" while civil society fills the Aula Magna of the University of Barcelona.

This tenth European Day of Languages has been commemorated with numerous actions carried out by most Catalan schools through games and workshops aimed at gathering the words preferred by children and young people.

The day concluded with the academic event "'For a country of all, schools in Catalan', which brought together more than 150 people at the Aula Magna of the University of Barcelona. The round table, began with the showing of a video that included the opinions of several Catalanophiles around the world in favor of linguistic immersion and included speeches by several professionals and experts in education who spoke of the role of language in the Catalan school.  Joaquin Arenas, educator and one of the promoters of the immersion model, Montserrat Cortés, professor at the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Barcelona, Ignasi Vila, professor at the University of Girona and Montserrat Company, master, took part in the conversation moderated by Professor Eugènia de Pagès. Interventions highlighted the values transmitted with this model of education, they made clear that it is an excellent example for promoting social cohesion, they proved that languages add up, and that linguistic immersion in Catalan, far from diminishing skills in Spanish, is the only way to ensure that future generations are truly bilingual and free to choose the language they want to live in.
