Unescocat’s Department of Sustainability aims to raise Catalan public awareness of the global dimension of environmental challenges through two strategic lines of action: the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014) and the United Nations International Decade of Action ‘Water for Life’ (2005-2015). Unescocat is participating in the celebration of the International Year of Forests (2011), the International Year of Chemistry (2011) and the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All. (2012)

The Department of Sustainability:

• translates reports of international reference into Catalan on issues relating to sustainability
• develops educational materials based on these reports
• carries out workshops for teachers and young people
• organises expert meetings and seminars
• participates in conferences and Catalan and international campaigns

In this field, Unescocat is a member of Barcelona City Council’s Environment and Sustainability Council, the Research Network on Education for Sustainability, the editorial board of the journal Educació i Sostenibilitat and has signed Barcelona’s Agenda 21 citizen commitment.
