Unescocat’s Department of Sustainability aims to raise Catalan public awareness of the global dimension of environmental challenges through two strategic lines of action: the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014) and the United Nations International Decade of Action ‘Water for Life’ (2005-2015). This year, Unescocat is participating in the celebration of the International Year of Forests and of the International Year of Chemistry.

The Department of Sustainability:

• translates reports of international reference into Catalan on issues relating to sustainability
• develops educational materials based on these reports
• carries out workshops for teachers and young people
• organises expert meetings and seminars
• participates in conferences and Catalan and international campaigns

In this field, Unescocat is a member of Barcelona City Council’s Environment and Sustainability Council, the Research Network on Education for Sustainability, the editorial board of the journal Educació i Sostenibilitat and has signed Barcelona’s Agenda 21 citizen commitment.
