Preserving linguistic diversity and promoting multilingualism are necessary in processes which help build peaceful co-existence between people. Since 2001, Unescocat has channelled its activities in this area through Linguapax which has an international network of delegations in Africa, America, Asia, Europe and the Pacific.

The Department of Linguistic Diversity-Linguapax:

  • carries out advisory work for national and regional governments on language policy development processes
  • participates in language revival projects
  • organises expert meetings and develops materials aimed at promoting the values of linguistic and cultural diversity
  • awards the International Linguapax Prize each year on 21 February, International Mother Language Day, to honour linguists, researchers, teachers or civil society activities for their advocacy of linguistic diversity and multilingual education.
