Unescocat directly monitors the implementation of the Convention and attends meetings of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage as an observer. Unescocat also offers advisory services for several initiatives by candidates for inclusion on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, such as Barcelona’s Ramblas, the Greco-Roman legacy, the Basque Olentzero Christmas tradition, and the Catalan castellers (human towers), in addition to monitoring the submitted application for the Mediterranean diet.
(Nairobi, 15-19 November 2010)
Unescocat takes part in the Catalan delegation supporting the inscription of the human towers known as "castells" on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. The committee members also recognize the value of the Chant of the Sybille of Mallorca, the Mediterranean diet, flamenco dance and other 43 nominees from all over the world like the Opera of Peking or the traditional skills of carpet weaving from Iran and Azerbaijan.
