Linguapax grants its annual award to Jon Landaburu Illaramendi, a key figure in the revitalization and promotion of the linguistic heritage of Colombia.
The Linguapax Prize, created in 2002, is the only existing recognition for the promotion of linguistic diversity. The Prize is awarded on a yearly basis as a recognition to linguists, researchers, teachers and members of civil society that have distinguished themselves for promoting linguistic diversity and multilingual education. The name of the winner was announced, as always, on February 21, coinciding with the International Mother Language Day.
Jon Landaburu Illaramendi (1943), a Basque with French and Colombian nationalities, is one of the major specialists of the indigenous languages of Colombia. For over 40 years of professional dedication and personal commitment, Jon Landaburu has acquired a profound knowledge of the diversity of languages and autochthonous linguistic ecologies of Colombia through direct experience and immersion, and has become key expert in their protection and revitalization.
