Increased participation for a better democracy! Right to vote at 16?

A participatory process to assess lowering voting rights to 16 years.


Promoting the exercise of political rights by accessing to voting rights at 16 years is a strategy that may allow shaking the social landscape and deepen democratic values in society, in general, and in young people, particularly .


If the age of 16 is considered as the majority for criminal matters or reproduction, why not for political matters? Setting the voting age at 16 years is currently under discussion at European and national institutions and social agencies.


The UNESCO Centre of Catalonia, together with the Directorate General of Participation in the Local Environment, want to develop an open process to experience news means and channels aimed at improving the quality of democracy through grassroots initiatives that promote public policies. The first intention is to initiate a public debate on the political participation of young people with a view to define elements and arguments to encourage the exercise of political rights through access to vote at the age of 16.
